The Amazing Grace Chimes are tuned to the first six notes of the inspiring hymn, Amazing Grace. Although the melody is of unknown origin, the lyrics were penned by Englishman John Newton in the late 18th Century. As a sailor aboard a slave ship, Newton underwent a spiritual awakening while in a storm at sea. Years later, after he had denounced the slave trade and become an ordained minister, it was that experience that Newton recalled when he wrote "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound..."
